From February 28 through March 7, 2015, a team will provide for the physical needs, as well as the spiritual needs, of the Honduran people. Follow us as we document the preparations and the planning, the training and the team-building, the going and the growing as we serve the LORD Jesus, our One and Only Savior, and the people of Honduras.

Our 2012 and 2013 missions are here as well ...

A God Concert ...

I know I probably said that my last post was the last post before leaving for Honduras but I just had to share this with you!!
This morning, I had to drive to Milwaukee for a work-related meeting; it’s about an hour each way. On the way there, I was in my morning haze, still waking up, drinking me tea and eating my breakfast bar, … but on the way back, I turned on the radio to listen to music. I listen to K-LOVE (105.3 fm) exclusively and I am not embarrassed to tell you that when I am by myself I tend to turn it up nice and loud and sing along with the songs that I really like.
So … right away, I was really pleased to “turn it up” because the song that came on was one that I REALLY LIKE.  But then, ... as song after song played, I became distinctly aware that God was putting on a very special concert ... JUST FOR ME!!  He can do that, you know!  Each song spoke out to me as if I was hearing it for the first time and I was completely amazed ... and giddy ... and touched!

So, what did I do?  I wrote them all down ... YEP, while I was driving (not the safest thing, I know, but I was thinking of YOU, and YOU, and YOU and I really just wanted to share with you what God did for me today!!

What I'm going to do is put the title of the song, the words that really struck me and then attach the link to it on YOU TUBE.  I hope that some of you will view/listen to these songs, definitely the first one and the last one.  The words are tremendous!!  If you need inspiration or a "pick-me-up", you will not be disappointed!

BE SURE TO TURN IT UP (and don't be embarrassed to sing along)!!!

From Tears to Triumph
Mary Southerland
Today's Truth
We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about the troubles we experienced in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death (2 Corinthians 1:8-9, NIV).

Friend to Friend
Trials and hard times are part of life. In fact, they are an important part of life. Yet, we desperately try to avoid any kind of pain, and when the difficult times come we frantically search for the nearest exit. I have discovered that the most beautiful life is often the most broken life. The ashes of death may very well be the fertile soil from which a new life of victory and promise will grow. God is forever covering each pain with His infinite love and mercy, bringing hope and encouragement where there was once only despair and death. We simply need to remember who God really is – the God of all comfort and compassion.

2 Corinthians 1:3 "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort!"

God stands ready to comfort His broken-hearted child. He longs to wrap His arms of love around us and bring the peace and comfort only He can give. In every trial, God is with us and for us. Some trials come as the result of sin and frail humanity while others come because we are Christians, striving to live a life of obedience to God. However, the reality is that all trials come with God's permission. Paul writes that God "comforts us every time we have trouble." In this verse, "trouble" literally means "narrow, confined or under pressure." Paul paints the picture of being hemmed in to the point that the only place to look for help was up. For the believer, everything is a divine appointment. What we call "dis-appointment" is really "His-appointment." Trials accompany faith and are a test, a measurement of growth given to see if the learner can pass … not pass out! Faith is always tested for a reason.

James 1:2-3 "My brothers and sisters, when you have many kinds of troubles, you should be full of joy, because you know that these troubles test your faith, and this will give you patience."

Trouble strengthens our faith and builds endurance, the ability to stay under the load. We have a loving Father who is committed to building the character of His Son in us. His love wants what is best for us, not what is easiest.

Our daughter attended our church school from K-3 through fourth grade. We then felt it was time to move her to public school for her fifth grade year in order to prepare her for middle school, a tough transition at best. All summer long, we talked about how wonderful her new school would be. We visited her new classroom, met her new teacher, bought new clothes, searched for just the right lunch box, ordered the latest back pack, accumulated the coolest school supplies and even drove by the school several times a week. As the school year approached, Danna grew more and more excited about her new adventure and seemed totally prepared for the transition…until the first day of school.

I prepared Danna's favorite breakfast, fixed her hair in her favorite style as she dressed in her favorite new outfit and off we went. When we approached the school entrance, Danna's excitement gave way to sheer terror. As we pulled up to the door Danna was to enter, I heard her gasp as she saw a large group of students waiting for the bell to ring. She did not know a single person! "Honey, you can do this," I encouraged, "and remember I will be praying for you all day!" With tear-filled eyes, Danna opened the car door and literally ran into the building. I cried all the way home and all day long. After cleaning the house three times, I was in the car pool line thirty minutes early. When the bell rang, the school door burst open and students spilled out. No Danna. Cars pulled around me as more students ran to meet waiting parents but still no Danna. Just about the time I began to panic, the door burst open and out came my daughter surrounded by a group of kids, laughing and talking, shouting promises to call each other that night. She hopped into the car, faced me with a grin and announced, "Mom, I am soooo popular!" Danna had a great school year and when the first day of middle school rolled around, Danna was the one assuring her friends that it was "no big deal." Looking back, the easiest decision would have been to take Danna back to the church school where everyone knew her and loved her, but the best decision was to allow Danna to work through that trial. It made her stronger.

Shallow love rescues easily and quickly. Real love walks with us through the trial. We don't know exactly what trials Paul endured, but there were bad enough to make Paul think he was going to die. Still, God loved Paul, protected him and controlled the circumstances, using them for His glory and Paul's ultimate good.

1 Peter 1:6 "So be truly glad! There is wonderful joy ahead, even though it is necessary for you to endure many trials for a while. These trials are only to test your faith, to show that it is strong and pure."

God wants us to trust Him in the trials of life, even when we do not understand, even when it makes no sense, even when there seems to be no explanation.
Isaiah 55: 8-9 "The Lord says, "My thoughts are not like your thoughts. Your ways are not like my ways. Just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts."

You see, it is easy to have faith and to trust God when the wind is still, the waters are calm and the nets are full of fish, but the true measure of our faith is in the midst of the howling storm. His comfort is best realized when our pain is strongest. The darker it gets, the brighter His light shines. We may be down, friend, but we are never out because God is the Shepherd of every valley, Lord of every storm and Friend of the wounded heart.

Let's Pray
Father, I am so guilty of looking for the easiest way out of a painful circumstance instead of looking for Your hand at work. I really want to become a woman of faith and learn to trust You enough to keep my gaze on You and my glance on my circumstances. And even when my faith is weak, please help me place that faith in You alone.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.

Now It's Your Turn
Read the following verses found in James 1:2-3: "My brothers and sisters, when you have many kinds of troubles, you should be full of joy, because you know that these troubles test your faith, and this will give you patience."

Think back over the past month. What trials have you faced? What was your response to those trials? Was your faith tested? Has God strengthened you or taught you a lesson through your trials? In your journal, record what God has accomplished in your life and how He has strengthened your faith through the tough times you have experienced.

Packing the TRUNKS (not the swimming kind) ...

In just 75 hours, we will begin our travels to Tegucigalpa, Honduras!!
This is the second to the last post I will do before leaving ... until we return ... next post will be our itinerary.

Tonight, we packed the trunks will all of the supplies that we will be taking with us to Honduras ... roughly about 1200 pounds of supplies!!!  With an additional couple of trunks coming from team members meeting up with us, we will be over 1400 pounds of supplies consisting of medicines, vitamins, personal care, dental, hair, and so much more!!!

Here's Cyndi ... sorting medical supplies for packing.

Here's Stacy and Paul - really enjoying packing the eye drops and saline solutions!

Each trunk cannot go over 50 pounds in weight ... oops! ... This one is just over; we'll have to take something out.

Packing CAN be a lot of FUN!

Here's our Pastor Bob securing one of the trunks.

Many people were there to help ... there were SO MANY things to pack into the trunks!

There were several large boxes of eyeglasses, bagged and boxed ~ I have never seen so many eyeglasses before, not even at Lens Crafters!!  Just imagine how many Hondurans will be able to SEE better!!!

Local dentists donated toothbrushes and toothpaste.  Teammate Erik sorted those and bagged them for packing.

Molly and Brynn thought they'd see if anyone noticed them trying to stow into the cargo trailer.
Nice try, girls!

These lovely ladies packaged all of the combs.

And this group worked on counting out the last pills that needed to be sorted.

Yep, that's our daughter!

Each trunk was numbered and labeled and its contents logged so items can be
easily found when we arrive in Honduras.

We packed all of the trunks in just over an hour!  Woo Hoo!!
Sweet Molly took a photo for us of the packing crew ~ what a great job everyone did!
We're just about ready, now, aren't we??

Commissioning and Team Building

Hi Everyone!  So, it is officially less than FIVE (5) days, especially by the time you read this ... WOW, we are really getting down to the wire now!!!

Yesterday (Sunday), our church "commissioned" us for our mission trip to Honduras; members of the mission committee, Elders and even our "team leader" was there to officially send us out on mission.  We all stood up as the commissioning words were stated and then they prayed over and for us.

During the past few weeks, 3x5 index cards have been set out on our Welcome Center that people could take in order to write down words of encouragement, Bible verses, quotes, etc ... for the whole mission team.  At the commissioning service, we were given these cards in a little carrying bag that was almost completely full!!
So, I did what you would expect me to do ... I spread them all out and took a photo of them, of course!!!

Great verse!
My new mantra!!

... so sweet ...

We always need this reminder ... AND IT HAS ALWAYS PROVEN TRUE!

In the afternoon, we went back to our church for some "team-building" exercises.  One of the men from our church is skilled and experienced in providing team-building sessions for military missions and youth.

We tried a few things that he had for us to do for a bit ... all fun and pretty simple as far as working as a team.
The first exercise that had a little "bite" to it, though, was the one shown below.
All of us had to stand along the yellow parking line, staggering ourselves on either side and simply hold our two pointer fingers out.  Then, a "helium stick" was placed along all of our fingers.  The rule was that our two fingers had to be touching the bottom of the stick at all times (no other fingers) and we had to work as a team to get the stick to the ground.
Sound simple enough??
Not so much!!  This activity took us quite a bit to acclimate to ... all of us were talking at the same time, doing the opposite of what we should have been doing and basically working against one another instead of together.
We DID finally get it and by counting together and moving the stick downwards in unison, we everntually made it to the ground.  I'm sure it was a bit painful for our facilitator. :-)

Our second 'rather difficult' activity involved all of us making a bridge with the colored discs provided and making it across to the "goal".  The thing is ... we only received half our team number in discs, all of us had to be planted on one or more discs at the same time and we all had to be connected.  If at any time, we lost contact with one another or stepped off a disc and onto the plain ground, we would LOSE one of our discs.  We spent at least a GOOD ten minutes discussing this and trying to come up with the appropriate strategy and while we started out with everyone talking at once, spouting our ideas at the same time again, we eventually worked it out, designated a leader and we made it through on the first time!!!  Do I hear a "WOO HOO"???

The last activity we did was not quite as difficult/challenging but it was fun, definitely less stressful in my opinion.  We were each given a little trough-like/half baton "thingy-majig" and we had to connect them as we staggered one another again.  See photo below ...

A tiny orange whiffle ball was placed in the first trough and the rules were that the ball had to move forward at all times, could not hit the ground and had to end up in the bucket at the end of all of us.

After the ball passed along each person's trough, we had to run down and re-connect at the end of the line for the ball to continue along until reaching the bucket, where the trough could be tipped downwards so the ball would drop in.

After our team-building exercises, we all went in the church where there were loads of people are there to share a fellowship meal together and share in a time of prayer for the mission team.

A group photo was taken, of course, ... all of us were there except Ben and Stacy who were both unable to attend.  It will be great to get one giant group photo of all of us in Honduras!
Thank-you Paul, for the "team-building" exercises!
Thank-you, Pastor Bob, for taking our photo!
Thank-you, everyone at our church, for your love, support, encouragement, yummy food and fellowship, etc ... we are so thrilled to serve our LORD JESUS and to share the blessings of God with you!!

Gathering the Lost Sheep - In Honor of Rich

Richard Robert Miller (1963 - 2012)
Richard Robert Miller, 49, of Edgerton, passed away on Monday, September 17, 2012, at his home with his loving family by his side, following a year battle against brain cancer. He was born on January 2, 1963, in Edgerton, son of the late Walter and Elaine (Funk) Miller. He was united in marriage on June 12, 2004, to Carol Prendergast, of Monroe, at the Fulton Church.

Rich was a faithful employee for 16 years at Independent Pharmacy Cooperative, Sun Prairie. He enjoyed making home video's, gardening, the outdoors, yard work, computers, photography and going to the casino. His special love was spending time with his wife and two sons.

He is survived by his wife of eight years, Carol; two sons, Henry age 6 and Charlie age 4, of Edgerton; six sisters, Becky (Todd) Popanz of Edgerton, Angie Miller of Sibley, MO, Marilyn Banaszak of Milladore, WI, MaryAnn (Paul) Shupe, Lexington, MA, LaVonn (Tim) Reed of Evansville, and Nancy (Craig) Christensen of Minneapolis MN; two brothers, Doug (Lyn Grossman) Miller of Atlanta, GA, and Edwin Miller of Edgerton; mother-in-law, Joan Prendergast of Janesville/Monroe; sister-in-law, Ann Miller of Edgerton; aunts, uncles, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Jerry Prendergast.

Friends may call at the Fulton Church, 9209 N Fulton St. Edgerton, WI. (Town of Fulton), on Friday, September 21, 2012, from 1 p.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Larry Mackenzie and Rev. Dr. Paul Shupe officiating. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a memorial fund is being set up for his sons education. The EHLERT FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES of Edgerton is assisting the family.

We attended the funeral for Rich Miller this past Friday.  Rich's wife, Carol, and Brian are first-cousins.  I haven't been to many funerals and it was so heart-breaking to imagine what Carol must be feeling and going through.  Their two young sons, Henry and Charlie, are so precious and adored by so many.  My heart really hurts for them knowing that they will grow up without their daddy.

Carol had asked that instead of "buying flowers", she thought Rich would really like it if friends and family with flower gardens brought some clippings from their homes.  Realizing that many flowers may no longer be in bloom, creativity was encouraged and she noted that she was really excited to see the church filled with friends' and families' garden gems.  Rich enjoyed gardening of all sorts and so we were extremely creative in our bouquet, even adding a pepper plant that was still flowering and had peppers growing and also a cucumber vine (with a cucumber on it) as well as hydrangeas, black-eyed Susan's, purple aster, zucchini leaves and flowers, hawthorn-tree branchlets with their fall berries and also some wisteria vine.  Our finished bouquet is pictured below.  We think it would have made Rich smile ...

During the service, we learned that one of the things Rich woo'd Carol with was a garden hoe.  He liked farming and gardening, ... and he grew things well.  Sure enough, that garden hoe, still with it's original bow, was placed outside near a fall arrangement in honor of Rich.  The pumpkin on the ground had a note carved on it from his sons to their daddy.

We also learned that Rich was the youngest of nine children born to his parents, on a farm in Edgerton, Wisconsin, ... the same farm where he lived with his wife and sons, where he passed away last week and where his remains will be buried.   In the photo below, his ashes were held in the blue-marble box, which was carefully and honorably displayed at the front of the sanctuary during the service.  The service was so special and uniquely planned, I think, with Rich in mind.

On the day that Rich passed away, Carol took this photo from her back patio.
Her caption is just below the photo.

"This was taken just shortly after my beloved Rich left this earth to dance on the streets of gold with his Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. Til we meet again love..."

The strength that Carol exhibited, in her husband's passing and at his funeral, was so clearly being drawn from her faith in the God who Created her and loves her, joined her with Rich for a time, blessed them immensely with two beautiful sons and then brought Rich to his eternal home in heaven.

Carol's response?

You are still my GOD and I will still love YOU!

Some of you may remember, a few weeks ago I posted THIS POST - (http://fromwisconsintohonduras.blogspot.com/2012/09/with-us-in-honduras-for-cm-and-rm.html).  In that post, I referred to Carol and Rich (without actually stating their names).  Carol has graciously allowed me to "talk about them" so in this post I am being much more specific.  In the previous post, I stated that in Honduras I would share with people their story.  I would tell people about Rich in the hopes that his death would not be in vain, that it would be for the Greater Good and to God's glory.  Perhaps, at the time, the idea was more to make me feel better about my confusion over the impending tragedy.

Now, though, Rich has passed and the idea seems to have shifted, especially after attending his funeral.  All of a sudden I realized that I don't have to wait to get to Honduras ... that I shouldn't wait until I get to Honduras ...

Consider the verses below ...
Luke 15:3 Then Jesus told them this parable: 4 “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

In all honesty, on most days ... I feel like the "ninety-nine" are actually the LOST SHEEP and the "one" is the loner who stays inside the pen. And I wonder if part of the reason why so many of us are anxious about sharing our faith one-on-one, six inches away from a real, live person might have something to do with the fact that, more often than not, those who are closest to us, those to whom we've expressed the Truth about Jesus, are the ones who have rejected it and/or were not permanently changed by the information given.

It often seems so difficult to reach the people around us ... this world that we live in is moving at such a raging speed as society and technology continue to propel it even further into a whirlwind ..., it's impossible to keep up and so many are sinking in "distraction", ... before too long, they don't even know how they got to where they are with no prospect of changing their situation.

They ... are ... lost.

Sometimes the wind can gently blow against our face without us even realizing it.
Sometimes it can move among the branches and leaves of the trees without us even seeing it.
Sometimes it can whisper through the creaks and crevices of our homes without us even hearing it.
That doesn't change the fact that it was there.
God is not invisible. Just because we can't see HIM the same way we see each other does not mean that He doesn't exist or that He's not there. God is present in our everyday lives but with all of the things that keep us distracted, we can often be oblivious to His presence. Oh, that your eyes would be opened, that your mind would be light and that you would experience the healing grace that is there ... just waiting for you to take hold of it. TRULY there is a love beyond your human understanding that remains available to you, yet you are not reaching for.

Though Carol has experienced a multitude of emotions in the last year and will continue to experience several emotions throughout her process of grief, it has been amazing already to witness her unwavering focus on our LORD and to truly see that she is anchored to Him.  His strength is her strength.  His comfort is her comfort.  His peace is her peace.   She knows where her husband is and while he is no longer here on earth with her, the knowledge that he is in the presence of the One who created Him is her reassuring peace.

But what about you?  When your next loved one dies, will you be at peace or will you suffer endlessly because of hopelessness?  What about when you die?  Will the person you leave behind be strengthened by peace or crippled by despair?

Family member, Friend, Reader ... I know that each person’s circumstances are different and there are many factors that play a part in a person’s spiritual condition but sometimes it really boggles my mind to imagine what keeps a person from putting their faith in the One and Only True God.  So, what is it?  What barrier keeps you from being confident that God is your Creator and His Son, Jesus, is your Savior?

Jesus, the Son of God, died for all of us who live in this fallen world because He loves us, ... He loves you and He wants for you to spend Eternity with Him in Heavenly Peace!!  How Can You NOT WANT that???

If I could make you, I would ... believe me ... I would feel so much better knowing that in Eternity, you will be there, forever released from all of the YUCK that is inevitably encountered in this world.  But I cannot force you ... it is a choice that God gives to you ... it's your choice.  Everyday, people make bad choices … ALL people … including you, ... including me. Yet, our bad choices don’t diminish or invalidate the greatness of God.  Our choices affect who we are, what our experiences are, how we relate to those experiences and never has so much depended upon the choice we have between life and death.

An old Cherokee chief was teaching his grandson about life…

[“A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.
“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.”

“One is EVIL – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt, and ego.”

“The other is GOOD – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.”

“This same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather,
“Which wolf will win?”

The old chief simply replied, “The one you feed.”

I don't actually mean to sound harsh when I tell you that there is no middle ground here and time is ticking for the ones who are sitting on the fence. It just is what it is ... opinions cannot change the TRUTH and for those of you who say "that's just what you THINK it is", this isn’t about me being right and it isn’t about doing and thinking whatever you want as long as you feel “good” and “comfortable” … THIS IS SERIOUS!! It's serious and there are people who truly care about the choices that you make.  And because sometimes it seems that what we think, feel, say or do has no bearing on the choices that you make, we do the one thing that we know is not in vain.  We’re praying for you ... and we’ll keep praying … that your lack of peace will only increase ... that the Spirit will continue to poke you until you can no longer ignore ... that His whisper will become the only voice you hear in your head, in your heart and in your soul ... that you will ultimately surrender to Love and Grace, thus finding True Peace.

LORD, Jesus, ... You are the Son of the Living God and You are my Salvation.  You are the only Pure Light in this cold, dark world ... You are the Way and the Truth and the Life and You have told us that no one shall come to the Father except through You.  I do not know all there is to know about You and I do not even understand all that I do know ... but I trust You and I believe You and I have faith in all that I do not understand because ... it is YOU ... and You would never hurt me and You are not against me.  You shelter me and You guide me and You sustain me.  You prepare a place for me in Your home ... in heaven ... and one day, I will see You, face-to-face and I will be complete.  LORD, what I have in You, I want others to have as well.  So many seem to reject You; do they really even know what they are doing?  LORD, I pray that they will hear the whisper of Your still, small voice as a resounding gong.  I pray that Your Spirit will visit in dreams, in the eyes of strangers, in a child's voice, in a smile ... and that blinders will be banned from awareness.  I pray that you will remove the pleasure of "distraction" and that a clear focus is unavoidable.  Halleluia ... You are inescapable!  I pray that they will resist the urge to continue running away from You and, rather, CHOOSE to run straight into your healing, comforting, Saving Grace!
In Your Precious Name, AMEN

 Jeremiah 29:12-15 (MSG)
12 “When you call on me, when you come and pray to me, I’ll listen.
13-14 “When you come looking for me, you’ll find me.
“Yes, when you get serious about finding me and want it more than anything else, I’ll make sure you won’t be disappointed.”

Matthew 18:12-14 (NIV)
12 “What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? 13 And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. 14 In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should be lost.
